Drive to Machame Gate (1,800m) for registration, then trek through dense montane rainforest filled with giant trees, colobus monkeys, and exotic birds. Reach Machame Camp for your first night on the mountain.
Ascend steeply through the last of the rainforest into open heathland and moorland with spectacular views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Cross the Shira Plateau and arrive at Shira Camp.
Rest and acclimatize at Shira Camp with a guided day hike to Lava Tower (approx. 4,630m) and back. This extra acclimatization climb is the key to higher summit success — enjoy the dramatic views, take photos, and prepare your body for the higher altitudes ahead.
Trek through the stark alpine desert zone with its dramatic giant lobelias and senecios, passing Lava Tower en route if not done the previous day. Descend into the beautiful Barranco Valley and arrive at Barranco Camp beneath the famous Barranco Wall.
Start your midnight climb from Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) for a magical sunrise on the Roof of Africa! After celebrating and taking summit photos, descend through the alpine desert to Barafu for a short rest, then continue down through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Private transfer back to Moshi or the airport. End your unforgettable 6-Day Machame Route Kilimanjaro adventure!
